Spring Carnival action is really starting to hot up as evidenced by the great win of Snitzerland in the Danehill Stakes, the epic battle between old adversaries Southern Speed and Manighar in the Makybe Diva Stakes, and the extremely popular win of the evergreen Danleigh in the Chelmsford Stakes at Warwick Farm.
The Makybe Diva Stakes over 1600 metres at Flemington is the highlight of racing this Saturday. The early favourite is last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed closely followed in the betting by former imports Manighar and Mawingo. Other highlights include the Let’s Elope Stakes, the Danehill Stakes featuring Golden Slipper runner-up Snitzerland, and the Bobbie Lewis Quality. At Warwick Farm in Sydney the Chelmsford Stakes is the highlight, with an excellent support card including the Furious Stakes, the Concorde Stakes and the Tramway Handicap.
Spring is upon us and the feature event this Saturday is the time-honoured Memsie Stakes at Caulfield. This Group 2 event over 1400 metres has the West Australian Luckygray and Sincero as early favourites with Rekindled Interest, Green Moon, Heart Of Dreams and Happy Trails in the next group of favoured runners. The McNeil Stakes for 3-year olds is the other feature of the day’s racing at Caulfield in which Elite Elle will be attempting to keep her unbeaten record intact. In Sydney, the return clash of Triple Crown winner Pierro and All Too Hard in The Run To The Rose over 1200 metres at Rosehill is the highlight of racing.
An outstanding win by the super-consistent and classy Pinwheel was the highlight of racing yesterday around Australia. Pinwheel made it back-to back victories in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes and in the process smashed the one million dollar mark in prize money; a fantastic effort for a horse that is yet to taste success at the elite level. Moment of Change, Albrecht, Nechita and Dystopia were all impressive in the other black-type races on the Warwick Farm card. Southern Speed was ultra-impressive in her victory in the Penny Edition Stakes at Morphettville Parks.
