Manikato Stakes Friday Night

Moonee Valley holds all the attention this weekend with the running of the G1 Manikato Stakes over 1200m on Friday night and G1 W S Cox Plate over 2040m on Saturday; the Manikato has attracted a top-class field of sprinters and Chautauqua is a short-priced favourite in early markets. Five-time G1 winner Buffering is sure to make a race of it with Chautauqua while Terravista, Rebel Dane and Srikandi are among the others that have to be respected.

The track at Moonee Valley is currently rated a good-4 (Thursday 2pm) and the rail is in the True position.

Caulfield Cup Day

The G1 Caulfield Cup, the best 2400-metre handicap in the world is this Saturday; New Zealander Mongolian Khan is favourite for the Caulfield Cup after his very good third in the Caulfield Stakes last Saturday but he will have to withstand a strong local and international contingent. Other feature races at Caulfield are the G2 Tristarc Stakes for mares over 1400m, G2 Caulfield Sprint over 1000m, G3 Caulfield Classic for 3-Y-O's over 2000m, G3 Moonga Stakes over 1400m, G3 David Jones Cup over 2000m and G3 Ethereal Stakes for 3-Y-O fillies over 2000m.

Caulfield Guineas Day

One of the great days of the Australian turf is Caulfield Guineas Day; in addition to the Caulfield Guineas for 3-Y-O's over 1600m, the WFA Caulfield Stakes over 2000m, Toorak Handicap over 1600m and Thousand Guineas for 3-Y-O fillies over 1600m are other G1's on this outstanding program. Other highlights at Caulfield are the G2 Herbert Power Stakes over 2400m and G2 Schillaci Stakes over 1100m. There is more G1 action at Randwick with the Spring Champion Stakes for 3-Y-O's over 2000m; the G3 Angst Stakes for mares over 1600m is the other feature at Randwick.

Turnbull Stakes Sunday

The dust will have settled in Melbourne after the AFL Grand Final but the Spring Racing Carnival rolls-on with superb G1 action at Flemington on Sunday headlined by the Turnbull Stakes over 2000m. Other highlights at Flemington include the G2 Gilgai Stakes over 1200m, G2 Edward Manifold Stakes for 3-Y-O fillies over 1600m, G2 Blazer Stakes for mares over 1400m and G3 Bart Cummings over 2500m.

The track at Flemington is currently rated a good-4 (Friday 4pm), the weather is fine and the rail is out 9 metres for the entire circuit.

Epsom Handicap Saturday

Most eyes will be on the great clash between Hawthorn and the West Coast Eagles in the AFL Grand Final on Saturday but there is also a superb meeting at Randwick. There are three Group 1's, the Epsom Handicap over 1600m, Metropolitan over 2400m and Flight Stakes for 3-Y-O fillies over 1600m; on a day when every race is black-type other features are the reappearance of Exosphere in the G2 Roman Consul Stakes for 3-Y-O's over 1200m, G2 Premiere Stakes over 1200m which sees the return of G1 winner Terravista and G3 Craven Plate over 2000m.

Moir Stakes Friday Night

Even with the AFL Grand Final on Saturday there are still two G1 meetings this weekend in Melbourne with the Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night and Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on Sunday; the WFA Moir Stakes over 1000m has attracted  a very good field which includes undefeated filly Petits Filous and multiple G1 winner Buffering. The G2 Bill Stutt Stakes for 3-Y-O's over 1600m, G2 Stock Stakes for mares over 1600m and G3 JRA Cup over 2040m are other features on an excellent card of racing.

Underwood Stakes Day

A great meeting at Caulfield on Saturday with the features being the G1 Underwood Stakes over 1800m and G1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m; other highlights at Caulfield are the G2 Thousand Guineas Prelude for 3-Y-O fillies, G3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude for 3-Y-O colts and geldings, Listed Harry White Classic and $250,000 Inglis Cup for 4-Y-O. There is also an excellent meeting at Rosehill with three G2 races, the Golden Pendant for mares, Stan Fox Stakes for 3-Y-O and Shannon Stakes; other highlights at Rosehill are the G3 Gloaming Stakes for 3-Y-O, G3 Colin Stephen Quality Handicap and Listed Reginald Allen Quality for 3-Y-O fillies.

George Main Stakes Saturday

Group 1 racing continues in Sydney on Saturday with the running of the WFA George Main Stakes over 1600m at Randwick; other features at Randwick are the G2 Tea Rose Stakes for three year old fillies over 1400m, G2 Hill Stakes over 2000m and G2 Shorts over 1100m. At Caulfield the G3 MRC Foundation Cup over 2000m and G3 William Hill Sprint Series Stakes for mares over 1200m are the highlights; the Foundation Cup is an important race as the winner receives automatic entry into the Caulfield Cup. The Penang Trophy over 1800m and Wylie Handicap over 1100m are the two Listed races at Morphettville.

Newcastle Cup Friday

It is a bumper meeting for Newcastle Cup Day on Friday with four Group 3 races headlined by the Newcastle Cup over 2300m; Melbourne Cup winners Hyperno, Gurner's Lane and Green Moon have all won the Newcastle Cup while Kensei placed in the Newcastle Cup before winning the 1987 Melbourne Cup so it should not be ignored from a future perspective. The Cameron Handicap over 1500m, Spring Stakes for three year olds over 1600m and Tibbie Stakes for mares over 1400m are the other three features on this excellent card.

The track at Newcastle is currently rated a good-4, the weather is fine and the rail is in the True position.

Golden Rose Stakes Day

The G1 Golden Rose Stakes at Rosehill and G1 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington are the feature attractions on Saturday; the Golden Rose for 3-Y-O over 1400m has attracted a small but select field which includes Exosphere, Press Statement and Speak Fondly. Other highlights at Rosehill are the G2 Theo Marks Stakes, G3 Kingston Town Stakes and G3 Sheraco Stakes for fillies and mares. A very good field is assembled for the WFA Makybe Diva over 1600 metres including Boban, Fawkner and Mongolian Khan. Other features at Flemington are the G2 Let's Elope Stakes for mares, G2 Danehill Stakes for 3-Y-O and G3 Bobbie Lewis Quality.
