William Hill Cox Plate 2040m Group One
Ben Melham 59kg
Paul Beshara
Grand campaigner lining up for 5th Cox Plate, best result nose-second to Shamus Award in 2013. Beaten over 5 lengths in 2 runs this preparation and very difficult to see him featuring at this stage of his career.
Brad Rawiller 59kg
Darren Weir
Outstanding galloper that has had 9 starts for Darren Weir for 4 wins and 5 seconds. Has already won G1 Memsie (1400m) and G1 Underwood (1800m) this Spring before gallant second to Winx in G1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m). Difficult to see him turning the tables on Winx at this distance but will try his heart out as always.
James McDonald 59kg
John O'Shea
Revelation of Spring Carnival. After being beaten 3.5L by Winx first-up in G2 Warwick (1400m) Hartnell has won G2 Chelmsford (1600m), G2 Hill (2000m) and G1 Turnbull (2000m) by combined total of 16.85L, thrashing easy Caulfield Cup winner Jameka in Turnbull. Has not beaten Winx in 3 contests but is airborne at moment and a legitimate threat with champion jockey James McDonald to ride.
Dwayne Dunn 59kg
John O'Shea
After promising a lot Hauraki has delivered on that promise this campaign. After first-up win in G2 Tramway (1400m) made Winx work when second in G1 George Main (1600m) before thundered-home to win G1 Epsom (1600m). Has failed in 3 Melbourne starts but he has never gone better. Place chance.
Brenton Avdulla 59kg
Patrick Webster
Very honest galloper that deserves his place in the field. Last campaign finished second to Winx in G1 Doncaster (1600m) and third to Lucia Valentina in G1 Queen Elizabeth (2000m). Has not been beaten far in 3 runs this preparation but has not placed and difficult to see in finish over 2040m at WFA in vintage field.
Mark Zahra 59kg
Andre Fabre
French galloper that is clearly X-factor with great record of 18 starts for 8 wins and 5 seconds. At first run this year finished second to champion Solow at Chantilly (1600m). Last-start G1 winner at Chantilly (1600m). Is two-time winner over 2400m so extra distance of little concern. Sure to be in the firing line for a long way but needs career-high performance to be winning.
Stephen Baster 59kg
Leon & Troy Corstens
Last campaign lost G1 Australian Cup (2000m) on-protest to Preferment. Brilliant winner of G2 Dato' Tan (1600m) at Moonee Valley 3 starts back. Just fair in 2 runs since and lacks class of some of his rivals but proven at track.
8 WINX (3)
Hugh Bowman 57kg
Chris Waller
Australia's champion racehorse shooting for 13th straight win, 9th G1 and back-to-back Cox Plates. Broke Might and Power's long-standing track record winning last year by 4.5L. Superb winner of G1 Doncaster (1600m) in Autumn carrying 6.5kg over limit on soft track Easy wins in G2 Warwick (1400m), G1 George Main (1600m) and G1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) at 3 runs this campaign. Recent form suggests as good as ever, proven at Moonee Valley. Only bad luck and/or a magnificent performance from one of her rivals will see her colours lowered.
Kerrin McEvoy 57kg
Kris Lees
Top-class mare recorded biggest win in G1 Queen Elizabeth (2000m) in Autumn. Has run well without threatening in 2 starts this preparation. Has excellent record in this distance range. Chances improve significantly on soft ground. Sure to be strong at finish. Definite place chance but doubtful she has the class to win.
Dean Yendall 47.5kg
David Vandyke
3YO filly with outstanding record in short career. Finished close second to Capitalist in G1 Golden Slipper (1200m) before winning G1 Sires' Produce (1400m) as 2YO. Returned with close second to Global Glamour in G1 Flight (1600m) before winning G1 Spring Champion (2000m). No filly has won since Surround in 1976 so she has task ahead in vintage field despite her undeniable ability and carrying only 47.5kg.
