The Mark Kavanagh-trained mare Wild Rain simply proved too fast for her rivals in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes over 1100m at Caulfield; Wild Rain sat outside Lord Of The Sky during the run and when champion jockey Damien Oliver released the brakes on the daughter of Manhattan Rain early in the straight the WFA Monash Stakes was all over bar the shouting. Wild Rain now has the impressive career record of seven wins, four seconds and a third from eighteen starts and based on her performance in the Monash she will be winning more races in this distance range. Trevinder battled-on well for second just ahead of Lord Of The Sky which had third placing taken from him by Atmospherical in the Stewards Room. Fast 'n' Rocking had no luck in the straight but his starting price of $2.80 was very short for a horse that rarely wins and always needs luck in his races.

At Rosehill the Listed Winter Stakes over 1400m was the feature attraction and it was won in strong style by the Kim Waugh-trained Oxford Poet; taken straight to the front by Tim Clark Oxford Poet had a good time in the lead and he fought-on strongly when challenged first by Ninth Legion and then by Zin Zan Eddie. Oxford Poet could only manage to finish fifth to Ninth Legion in the Civic Stakes at his previous start a fortnight earlier but with a 1kg weight advantage, a softer track and an easier lead Oxford Poet was able to turn the tables. Ninth Legion ran very well again for third carrying 60kg while Zin Zan Eddie battled-on strongly for second. Oxford Poet is no superstar but he will continue to be competitive on soft tracks against this class of horse.
