The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained 3-Y-O Redzel proved too good for his older rivals in the July Sprint over 1100m at Canterbury Park; taken straight to the front from his outside barrier by Kerrin McEvoy Redzel never looked in danger of defeat from the time the gates opened. Redzel had a big lead early in the straight and although runner-up Wouldn't It Be Nice made-up many lengths Redzel was the best horse on the day. Redzel did not have a great record on wet tracks prior to the July Sprint but he had no problem with the heavy-8 on this occasion which gives him the opportunity to win even more races in the future. Forget was a distant third and he finished just ahead of Gold Symphony which battled-on well from a long way back.

The Listed Tattersall's Mile Handicap over 1600m at Doomben was won in great style by the Ciaron Maher-trained Victorian Akavoroun; despite drawing an outside barrier Michael Cahill had Akavoroun in a perfect position just behind the leaders after about 100 metres. Flamboyer gave a good kick at the top of the straight but he had no answer to the finishing burst of Akavoroun which came-away to win by a length and a half from Brettan with Jetset Lad cutting Flamboyer out of third place right on the line. Akavoroun had not won a race since he took-out the 2014 Winter Championship Final at Flemington but now that he has finally returned to the winner's circle he will continue to be competitive in races of this class. The Listed Belmont Classic over 2200m was won in strong style by the Simon Miller-trained Rosmartini while the even-money favourite Juicing Carrots could only manage to finish fourth.
