The race for the Melbourne Jockeys Premiership is as hot as ever with both Luke Nolen and Craig Newitt sharing the spoils with two winners each at Caulfield on Saturday; if you were fortunate to back their mounts you would have won a tidy sum as their winners started $7, $35, $8.50 and $7.50 respectively on TAB Sportsbet final fixed odds.
Luke Nolen rode one winner yesterday at Sandown so with only four metropolitan meetings remaining in the season he now holds a one win lead; to say the title is up for grabs is an understatement!
Saturday's results from Caulfield were a mixed bag. The Wizard is loath to criticise a jockey for a beaten runner but a rare poor ride was turned in by Luke Nolen on Epingle in race 4 at Caulfield. After having the mare last on the rails (in contrast to her recent performances much closer to the speed) for the majority of the race Epingle ran very well to get up and run third for those of you who hopefully backed her each way. The leader Bianmick had no trouble in keeping going for an easy victory.
In race 5 at Caulfield Miss Bindi and Show Up were both disappointing in the heavy ground. Despite meeting Johannapine 4.5kg worse for their most recent clash, Serene Star had no trouble beating her again. Serene Star was in our top four selections winning at $8.50. Light Express, scratched from this race, won impressively again at Morphetville Parks at fixed odds of $2.40.
Platelet won the Sir John Monash Stakes at $14; she was in our top five selections. Le Societe ran quite well in 4th place but was not quite good enough on the day whilst Second Effort, despite having not lost a race previously on rain affected ground, was very disappointing considering he had conditions to suit.
