Former champion jockey Roy Higgins, MBE, passed-away on Saturday evening; Higgins won the Melbourne Jockeys' Premiership a record-equaling eleven times and he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall Of Fame in 1987. Dubbed 'The Professor' Roy had a great association for many years with Bart Cummings winning the 1965 and 1967 Melbourne Cup for Bart on Light Fingers and Red Handed; Light Fingers was always Roy's favourite but Gunsynd, Leilani, Storm Queen, Tontonan, Century, Taj Rossi and Maybe Mahal are just some of the great horses Roy rode during his illustrious career.
In addition to his two Melbourne Cups Roy also rode the winner of a Caulfield Cup, two Cox Plates, two Golden Slippers, four Victoria Derbys, four Blue Diamonds, four Lightnings, five Craiglees, five VRC Oaks, six AJC Oaks and eight Futuritys. Roy retired from riding in 1983 with 2312 winners and he is second-only to George Moore with 108 Group 1 victories; Roy battled with weight issues throughout his career which makes his riding record that much more remarkable. Roy Higgins was 75 years of age.
