Black Caviar, undoubtedly one of the two greatest ambassadors for horse racing this country has ever had, alongside Phar Lap, will not race during the Spring Carnival this year; a further decision as to whether she will race again in 2013 will be made when all of the owners come together again in September. On one hand it is disappointing that her legion of fans will miss out on the opportunity to see her race again this year; on the other hand it is heartwarming to know that the best interests and the welfare of this champion horse are at the forefront of the decision-making process.
Although the injuries she sustained in her gallant victory in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last month have subsided, the extra time away from racing can only benefit her, if her connections decide to race on next year. Whatever decision is ultimately made by her connections about her future, we can be certain that the welfare of Black Caviar will be their priority, and for that alone, their decision should be respected. As that ultimate decision has not been made yet, the Wizard of the Turf's Question of the Week, as to whether Black Caviar should race on or be retired, is as relevant as ever, so we would love to know your opinion. We are also running an on-line poll on this question so don't forget to cast your vote. One of the most avid followers of Wizard of the Turf, Oracle, recently made this comment in relation to Black Caviar's future, "No doubt the Flemington Carnival would be very tempting, as would the breeding barn sooner than later but would the coming spring be in the best interest of the horse ??" Well said Oracle, and I look forward to your prognostications in the future.
